Producer Slingo\u00a0<strong>\u201ccouldn\u2019t be more thrilled\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0with the outcome of this year\u2019s event:\u00a0<strong>\u201c2018 year marked a new era for EMC in more ways than one. Already there are some incredible international opportunities for some of the artists that participated in EMC and EMCPLAY &#8211; we&#8217;re incredibly excited to see these artists signing to agencies overseas and look forward to seeing some of them on tours and festivals in exciting new markets in 2019.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The theme of 2018\u2019s EMC was\u00a0<strong>\u2018The Future of Yesterday\u2019<\/strong>, with guest speakers who pioneered the international electronic scene \u2013 such as overseas luminaries\u00a0<strong>SASHA, Greg Wilson<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Gilles Peterson<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 along with home industry icons such as Australian manager\u00a0<strong>John Watson (Paul Mac, The Presets)<\/strong>\u00a0who nurtured the scene\u2019s growth in Australia, swapping notes with a new generation of talent who are now driving electronic music forward. Together, the various guests and attendees discussed how the methods and learnings of electronic music\u2019s rich past can inform and add value to today\u2019s scene. In his artist management keynote\u00a0<strong>Watson<\/strong>\u00a0emphasised the importance of keeping your audience on their toes, delivering the unexpected rather than the expected, as the tool to longevity in artist careers, while\u00a0<strong>SASHA<\/strong>, who reflected on his decades-spanning career in conversation Billboard Magazine\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Lars Brandle<\/strong>, attributed longevity to constantly challenging oneself. Social media \u2013 as one of the key differences separating today\u2019s electronic artists from yesterday\u2019s \u2013 was cited as both a blessing and a curse, with disco icon\u00a0<strong>Greg Wilson\u00a0<\/strong>longing for the days when electronic music still had a sense of mystery to it, and when the DJ played from a dark corner and not on a podium, with\u00a0<strong>SASHA<\/strong>\u00a0in agreement, highlighting the massive transparency of artists in 2018, and the pressures of electronic artists now to have a constant, and relevant, social media presence. Of 2018\u2019s positives,\u00a0<strong>Gilles Peterson<\/strong>\u00a0spoke of the eclecticism, and fearlessness, in the electronic music productions that have emerged in 2018, and\u00a0<strong>SASHA<\/strong>\u00a0praised the widening availability of music-making software as increasing accessibility to the genre tremendously, and of the widespread global recognition for electronic music as a permanent and weighty addition to the genre pool. \u00a0Leading contemporary Australian electronic artists\u00a0<strong>Hayden James<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Set Mo<\/strong>, both certified Gold-record selling artists, who have built (and continue to grow) their careers at home here in Sydney, and now each have a firm footing abroad, spoke confidently and humbly of the hard work, long years, and determination that its taken to get to where they are now. In conversation with\u00a0<strong>triple j\u2019s Linda Marigliano, Hayden James<\/strong>\u00a0spoke of his creative process and the importance of songwriting over technicalities, reflecting on some of his key collaborations, including with pop star\u00a0<strong>Katy Perry,<\/strong>and the high regard held for\u00a0<strong>Australian\u00a0<\/strong>electronic artists internationally. While\u00a0<strong>Set Mo\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0agents, publicists, distributor and manager collectively spoke about how as a team they\u2019ve navigated eleven single releases in 2018. Audiences were no doubt reflecting during both artists sessions on how lucky we are to have\u00a0<strong>Australian<\/strong>\u00a0electronic artists representing our scene internationally with such down-to-earth, humorous and friendly natures; speaking volumes of the reputation of the affable general character of our industry at large.<\/p>\n<p>Holding true to its original vision of making\u00a0<strong>Sydney\u00a0<\/strong>the heartland of electronic music for the\u00a0<strong>Asia-Pacific region<\/strong>, and exploring the\u00a0<strong>Asia-Pacific<\/strong>\u00a0as one of the biggest growth platforms for electronic music, this year EMC hosted a series of panels focused on the Asian market, including Touring\u00a0<strong>Asia<\/strong>, an intro to\u00a0<strong>Chinese<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Streaming<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Social Media<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Bali<\/strong>:\u00a0<strong>The Ibiza<\/strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0<strong>Asia-Pacific.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>China<\/strong>\u00a0in particular, was a hot topic, with booking agents from\u00a0<strong>Paradigm (US)<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Supermodified (Asia)<\/strong>\u00a0discussing methods of breaking the\u00a0<strong>Asian<\/strong>\u00a0touring market. Alchemist Group\u2019s\u00a0<strong>August Cohlmia<\/strong>\u00a0flagged\u00a0<strong>Chinese social media apps<\/strong>\u00a0as huge assets, and the importance of integrating with those, along with an emphasis on artist-to-fan interaction via social endorsement for new artists from larger artists with\u00a0<strong>Chinese fanbases<\/strong>, along with movie soundtrack placement.\u00a0<strong>The Bali: Ibiza of the Asia Pacific<\/strong>\u00a0session also had attendees intrigued, as tour agents and event promoters spoke of the region\u2019s potential, and outlined the potential challenges, and gains to be had, of making a serious move into carving out a space for regular\u00a0<strong>Australian electronic music events in Bali<\/strong>, with all agreeing that it was important to not just go to\u00a0<strong>Bali<\/strong>\u00a0to make gain, but to add ongoing value to the economy \u2013 and to hold events in a sustainable manner that won\u2019t impact the local environment \u2013 with Raving Sustainably the feature topic of another informative discussion with\u00a0<strong>Blond:ish<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Globelet.<\/strong>\u00a0Representatives from\u00a0<strong>Los Angeles\u2019 A Club Called Rhonda<\/strong>, and Amsterdam\u2019s\u00a0<strong>ADE<\/strong>, spoke on a panel about Inclusiveness in Programming, and\u00a0<strong>MTV presenter Flexmami\u00a0<\/strong>delivered an image styling intensive for budding electronic musicians, were amongst the diverse selections on offer.<\/p>\n<p>In a panel reflecting on the work of the\u00a0<strong>The Night Time Industries Association<\/strong>, NTIA\u2019s Michael Rodrigues spoke of the how the roles of members of the NTIA are designed to intersect for best results \u2013 highlighting how the work of groups such as\u00a0<strong>Keep Sydney Open<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>EMC<\/strong>\u00a0in activating people feeds into the City of Sydney\u2019s policy work. Councillor Jess Miller enlightened audiences as to the reality they face in Council bringing the r community on board to support the new plans for a 24 hour precinct in Alexandria (despite positive feedback from night time players) and stressed the need for public support of the proposed Development Control Plan changes following its 27th of November public exhibition launch.\u00a0<strong>Music media heads from Sydney, Melbourne\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0London<\/strong>\u00a0converged for a panel on balancing editorial integrity with commercial interests. While reaching an audience is now not the primary role of music media, thanks to the advent of social media, all agreed that music media still has a critical role to play in reaching fans through telling stories in a unique way. The ability for media to craft good narrative and provide a critical framework from which to approach the music industry is as strong as ever, with music media coverage vital in lending integrity to artists\u2019 careers \u2013 and assisting in gaining playlist and booking placements, as\u00a0<strong>Stoney Roads\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0founder\u00a0<strong>Andrew Cotman<\/strong>\u00a0pointed out. Approaching native advertising from a fans-first perspective was key according to\u00a0<strong>Bolster\u2019s Oliver Hall<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>DJ Mag\u2019s Charlotte Cjliffers<\/strong>\u00a0said it was important to ensuring content prefaces creativity before the message \u2013 readers won\u2019t mind the subtle support of brands if the content produced is engaging and of a high-quality. Education was key in the\u00a0<strong>EMC Studio<\/strong>, with many talented producers turning into teachers in the theatre in-the-round experience of these interactive workshop sessions, as\u00a0<strong>Human Movement, Kids at Midnight<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Sampology, Hood Rich<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Stace Cadet, Women of Electronic Music Production Perth<\/strong>, and more, shared the inner machinations of their process on the big screen for eager minds to learn.<\/p>\n<p>Delegates congregated at inner-city venue the Lansdowne at the end of each day to check out the talent at the newly coined\u00a0<strong>EMCPLAY LIVE<\/strong>, a performance selection of twelve of the next big things in electronic music curated by\u00a0<strong>triple j\u00a0<\/strong>Unearthed\u2019s Dave Ruby Howe, exposing Australia\u2019s most exciting new electronic music artists to some of the world\u2019s key influencers in the electronic music space. All in attendance noted the high caliber of the\u00a0<strong>EMCPLAY LIVE<\/strong>showcasing artists, and agreed that the future of electronic music is in great hands. The live showcases formed part of a strong after-hours event program that saw clubs and venues packed out all weekend long, including the\u00a0<strong>SASHA<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Greg Wilson<\/strong>\u00a0fronted\u00a0<strong>Rio Revel at Manning Bar<\/strong>, the recording of a\u00a0<strong>Gilles Peterson Worldwide FM<\/strong>\u00a0takeover at N<strong>etwork Connection Records in Newtown<\/strong>, and with\u00a0<strong>Gilles Peterson<\/strong>\u00a0commandeering the crowd at an inner-city open air\u00a0<strong>Summer Dance party<\/strong>\u00a0as the sun set on the week that was\u00a0<strong>EMC.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe&#8217;d like to extend our gratitude to every person who participated in the program whether as a speaker or an attendee,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0said\u00a0<strong>Slingo<\/strong>\u00a0in closing, \u201cand of course from myself, personally a huge thank you to the incredible\u00a0<strong>EMC team<\/strong>and our supporting partners.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cBuild a story that you want to be a part of,\u201d\u2019\u00a0stated respected Sydney songwriter and producer\u00a0Hayden James in his keynote at Electronic Music Conference;
