037 THERE’S AN UNDENIABLE SURGE OF AFRICAN ARTISTS IN ELECTRONIC MUSIC. WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE REASONS BEHIND THIS? There have always been a lot of African artists in electronic music. Still, in recent years, artists such as Black Coffee have played a vital role in shining a light on these artists and the Afro sound, breaking down barriers and opening people’s eyes. HOW DID YOU GET INTO ELECTRONIC MUSIC? My brother left home to go to France, and when he returned, he introduced me to electronic music. From age 16 until I left home, I listened to electronic music CDs daily. The only references I had before this were from hearing it on television. WHO WERE YOUR INFLUENCES AND THE PEOPLE WHO HELPED YOU BECOME A DJ? One of my biggest inspirations was Axwell, a master of melodies. I was (and still am) a big fan of Roger Sanchez too. ALTHOUGH YOU CAN NAVIGATE THROUGH DIFFERENT STYLES, WHICH ONE DO YOU FEEL MOST COMFORTABLE WITH? I’ve dabbled in multiple genres throughout my career, which has encouraged me to see music in a different light; I don’t like to put anything in a box. I wanted to create a bridge between genres because I didn’t particularly appreciate choosing one or another; I liked it all. I started creating a space to marry various sounds induced with many elements. I’ll always be passionate about exploring other genres; it fascinates me. I’m not limited by anything and am always interested in tapping into as many genres as possible. [Eng]
