TIME LOST:

DAVID MORALES: “IBIZA IS A MAGICAL ISLAND. THE WORST IS THAT IT’S GETTING VERY EXPENSIVE.”.

It’s not every day you get the chance to chat with a legend like David Morales. An artist who has been DJing for almost 50 years and who knows Ibiza like few others. We talked to him about his vision of Ibiza then and now, and his current context with house music.

Where are you in your career?

I’m in the best creative moment ever.

What have you learned over the years on a personal level in this industry?

That DJing and producing music is timeless.

Moving on to Ibiza, when was your first time on the island, what do you remember from that time?

My first time was playing for Cream at KU in 1994. I was not ready for the experience. And back then it was all dirt roads. I had never in my life played at a club that big.

How have you seen the passing of the years in Ibiza? What summary can you make from then until now?

Ibiza has evolved with the new generation. At one time it was something really hedonistic. People came for the music. There was no pretentiousness, no VIP everyone was on the same planet. Now the whole world knows about Ibiza. It’s the clubbing mecca of the world. But I will say one thing……There’s no place in the world like Ibiza.

What is the best and the worst that Ibiza has to offer today 2024?

Ibiza is a magical island. The worst is that it’s getting very expensive.

There has always been talk of places that have tried to imitate Ibiza, but the reality is that none have reached the level, you have visited many places, what cities, clubs have surprised you in recent years?

The only other island that I feel has a similar vibe is Mykonos. And I love Japan. They love there music.

And the public, what differences do you feel in the different cities, clubs… around the word?

I feel that right now the scene is very popular so people are very in tune with all the DJ’s that are representing the scene. It’s just growing by the day.

What do people demand nowadays when it comes to buying music?

Do people even buy music these days? There’s so much music out that, how can anyone even remember a track?

Do you see classic house music making a comeback?

Well it’s the only genre that has vocals. Look how big Glitterbox has become.

What are the differences between a David Morales set at Pikes or Glitterbox?

Everything!!!!! The difference is that I get to tell a story. Playing the first record and the last record.
